Unorthodox Therapy Founder Speaks at Cambodian Flag Raising, Honoring Culture, History, and Mental Health Healing in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA — In a deeply meaningful and personal moment, Monychann (Mo) McCarty, founder of Unorthodox Therapy Inc. (UTInc.), was invited to speak at the Cambodian Flag Raising Ceremony in Philadelphia, recognizing Cambodian New Year and celebrating the strength and resilience of the Cambodian community.

For McCarty, the opportunity carried profound significance. Raised by Cambodian parents, she stood in the very city where her nonprofit was born, speaking not only as a founder and community leader, but as a daughter of a culture shaped by survival, history, and perseverance.

Philadelphia is home to one of the largest Cambodian populations outside of Cambodia, making it a vital center for cultural preservation and community connection. The flag raising ceremony brought together city officials, community leaders, and residents to honor heritage while reflecting on the journey of Cambodian Americans and their contributions to the city.

Cambodian New Year, a three day celebration beginning April 13, marks a time of renewal, remembrance, and cultural pride. This year, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker officially recognized Cambodian New Year in Philadelphia, issuing a proclamation on April 15, further affirming the importance of the community’s presence and legacy within the city.

During her remarks, McCarty spoke candidly about mental health, generational trauma, and healing within the Cambodian diaspora. She acknowledged the lasting impact of the Khmer Rouge era, a period of genocide and displacement that continues to affect generations of Cambodian families.

“Our community carries stories that are not always spoken about,” McCarty shared. “There is trauma that has been passed down, silence that has been normalized, and healing that is still needed. Mental health is part of our story too, and it deserves space in our conversations.”

Unorthodox Therapy’s work focuses on bridging the gap between mental health awareness and accessible support, particularly for communities where cultural stigma or lack of resources may prevent individuals from seeking help. Through community based programming, partnerships, and culturally mindful conversations, UTInc. continues to create spaces where healing feels possible and approachable.

The event was attended by key city leaders, councilmembers, and advocates who gathered in solidarity to celebrate Cambodian culture while recognizing the importance of continued dialogue around wellness and community care.

For McCarty, standing at the intersection of identity, purpose, and service was a defining moment. It represented not only personal growth, but the ability to bring mental health awareness into cultural spaces that have historically lacked access to these conversations.

“This moment was bigger than me,” McCarty added. “It was about honoring where I come from, while also creating space for where we are going. Healing is part of our future.”

Unorthodox Therapy remains committed to supporting diverse communities across Philadelphia by integrating mental health advocacy into cultural, civic, and community driven spaces.
