Unorthodox Therapy Travels to Cambodia to Build Partnership with Iris Phnom Penh in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

Phnom Penh, Cambodia — Unorthodox Therapy Inc. (UTInc.) recently traveled to Cambodia to connect with Iris Phnom Penh, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. Founded in 2007 as The Mission Worldwide and officially registered in Cambodia under that name, Iris Phnom Penh has been working on the frontlines to protect women and girls and provide pathways to safety, restoration, and dignity.

The visit was rooted in UTInc.’s desire to better understand how a small, community based nonprofit can meaningfully support and partner with underfunded organizations doing critical work abroad. While UTInc.’s primary mission centers on women’s mental health in Philadelphia, the organization recognizes that healing and justice are global and deeply interconnected.

During their time in Phnom Penh, UTInc. leadership met with the directors of Iris Phnom Penh to learn firsthand about the organization’s work in and around areas impacted by the red light district. Iris Phnom Penh focuses on removing women and girls from cycles of exploitation and providing safe haven, long term support, and opportunities for rebuilding their lives outside of trafficking.

“It was an honor and a privilege to sit with leaders who are doing this work with integrity, courage, and deep compassion,” shared Monychann (Mo) McCarty, founder of Unorthodox Therapy Inc. “Being surrounded by women who are truly for the people and for other women was humbling. This experience reminded us that healing is not just emotional, it is also about safety, freedom, and restoration.”

The visit reinforced UTInc.’s belief that partnership begins with listening. Rather than arriving with assumptions, the organization sought to understand the real needs of Iris Phnom Penh and explore how support could be offered in ways that are ethical, sustainable, and respectful of local leadership.

Human trafficking remains a devastating reality in many parts of Cambodia, particularly in vulnerable communities where women and girls are at high risk of exploitation. Organizations like Iris Phnom Penh provide a critical lifeline, offering protection, advocacy, and hope for those seeking to escape harmful environments and rebuild their futures.

For UTInc., this international connection reflects a broader commitment to standing with women wherever they are. While the organization remains deeply rooted in local community work, it also believes in showing up globally when values align and when women’s safety and healing are at stake.

Unorthodox Therapy looks forward to continued relationship building with Iris Phnom Penh and remains committed to exploring thoughtful ways to support their life saving work.
