Unorthodox Therapy Founder Shares Message of Community and Grassroots Leadership During Address in Philadelphia City Council Chambers

Philadelphia, PA — Following her recognition during Women’s History Month, Monychann (Mo) McCarty, founder of Unorthodox Therapy Inc. (UTInc.), delivered a heartfelt message inside Philadelphia City Council Chambers, encouraging women across the city to believe that meaningful work done in community can and will be recognized.

Speaking to Philadelphians, McCarty reflected on her journey as a transplant to the city and how deeply the community has shaped both her personal growth and the mission of Unorthodox Therapy. Her remarks centered on the importance of connection, grassroots leadership, and the power of showing up consistently for the people and neighborhoods that make up Philadelphia.

Although not originally from Philadelphia, McCarty shared that her commitment to understanding the city required more than observation. It required presence, listening, and time spent within the neighborhoods she now serves.

“Philadelphia welcomed me, but I knew I had to truly understand it,” McCarty shared during her remarks. “I have had the opportunity to travel across all 10 councilmatic districts, meeting women from every corner of this city. When you walk the neighborhoods, listen to people’s stories, and sit in community spaces, you begin to understand the strength and resilience that defines Philadelphia.”

Her speech emphasized that recognition should not be reserved only for large or well established organizations. Grassroots leaders who are working directly in communities often carry some of the most important responsibilities in supporting and uplifting others.

McCarty encouraged women across the city to continue pursuing their work with purpose, whether they are leading established organizations or simply showing up in their neighborhoods to support others.

“The work matters whether it is grassroots or fully established,” McCarty said. “Community sees it. Community feels it. And eventually, community honors it.”

For McCarty, the experience of touring the city’s council districts has been a defining part of her journey as a nonprofit leader. It allowed her to witness firsthand the diverse experiences of women throughout Philadelphia and reinforced her belief that healing, opportunity, and support must reach every neighborhood.

Her address also acknowledged the unique perspective of being a newcomer who has embraced the responsibility of learning the city from the ground up. While many transplants experience Philadelphia from a distance, McCarty described her journey as one that required stepping directly into the everyday realities of the communities she serves.

“It is not often that someone new to the city gets to experience the true heartbeat of Philadelphia,” she shared. “The grit, the resilience, the honesty of the people here is what makes this city special.”

Through Unorthodox Therapy, McCarty continues to advocate for women’s mental health, community healing, and grassroots collaboration. Her message during the City Council address reinforced a simple but powerful truth: when community support and purpose align, meaningful change becomes possible.
