Unorthodox Therapy Expands Support for Mothers of Children on the Autism Spectrum Beyond Awareness Month
Philadelphia, PA — As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, Unorthodox Therapy Inc. (UTInc.) is calling attention to a deeper reality. For many families, especially mothers, autism is not a moment of awareness, it is a daily lived experience that requires ongoing emotional, mental, and community support.
While April brings visibility to autism, UTInc. emphasizes that the conversation cannot end with the month. Mothers raising children on the spectrum often carry a significant mental and emotional load that extends far beyond what is publicly acknowledged. From navigating school systems and therapies to managing routines, behaviors, and advocacy, the responsibility can be both rewarding and overwhelming.
Unorthodox Therapy has intentionally created a dedicated space within its programming to support these mothers. Through its community based model, UTInc. offers a support group specifically for moms of children on the autism spectrum, meeting on the fifth Friday of the month. These gatherings are designed to provide a safe, understanding environment where women can speak openly, share experiences, and receive support from others who truly understand the journey.
“Our goal is to create a space where moms do not have to explain themselves,” said Monychann (Mo) McCarty, founder of Unorthodox Therapy Inc. “There is a different level of exhaustion and strength that comes with raising a child on the spectrum. We want to make sure those mothers have a place where they feel seen, supported, and cared for.”
Unlike traditional support settings, UTInc. approaches mental health through a community first model, blending conversation, emotional support, and shared lived experience. The organization recognizes that healing and support do not always happen in clinical environments. Sometimes they happen in rooms where women feel safe enough to be honest about both the beauty and the challenges of their journey.
The program also addresses the mental health impact on caregivers, acknowledging that burnout, isolation, anxiety, and emotional fatigue are common but often unspoken experiences among mothers. By creating intentional spaces for connection, UTInc. aims to reduce isolation and build a network of support that extends beyond a single meeting.
As April ends, Unorthodox Therapy continues to advocate for year round awareness, understanding, and support for families impacted by autism. The organization remains committed to ensuring that mothers have access to resources, community, and spaces where their voices are heard.
“Awareness is important, but real support is what sustains families,” McCarty added. “We are here for the everyday moments, not just the designated ones.”
