Unorthodox Therapy Participates in Historic Renaming of Emma Chappell Way in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – May 22, 2025 — Unorthodox Therapy proudly joined city leaders, elected officials, and community members to celebrate the historic renaming of the 700 block of Market Street to “Emma Chappell Way.” The dedication honored the life and legacy of Emma Chappell, the first Black woman to establish a bank in the City of Philadelphia.

The official resolution to rename the street was unanimously approved by the Philadelphia City Council on February 13, 2025, during a session that highlighted Chappell's significant contributions to the city's financial landscape. A community celebration followed on May 19, 2025, bringing together residents, activists, and descendants to commemorate this landmark occasion.

Emma Chappell was a visionary leader in finance and a fearless advocate for Black economic empowerment. Starting her banking career in 1959, she broke barriers by becoming the first African American woman vice president of a major commercial bank in Pennsylvania. In 1992, she founded the United Bank of Philadelphia — the first bank in the city organized by African Americans in over 60 years — with a mission to serve communities historically excluded from financial opportunities.

Councilmember Mark Squilla, who introduced the resolution to rename the street, joined Council President Kenyatta Johnson, Mayor Cherelle Parker, and other dignitaries in honoring Emma Chappell’s enduring impact. Her daughter, Tracey Carter, was also present to witness the momentous occasion alongside descendants, activists, and faith leaders.

The renaming was not just a tribute to Chappell’s professional accomplishments but a celebration of her fearless commitment to uplifting her community. Through her leadership, she helped fund churches, minority-owned businesses, and home ownership — often extending loans when others wouldn’t.

As a nonprofit rooted in healing, Unorthodox Therapy was deeply honored to stand in solidarity at this inaugural ceremony. Our presence reflects our mission to honor the women who’ve come before us — especially those who built pathways to financial and emotional wellness when no doors were open. Emma Chappell showed us what it means to lead with courage, and we carry that same spirit in our work today.
